Chicago is the largest city in the state of Illinois and the American Midwest of the United States and the world's twenty-five largest urban areas by population, and rated an alpha world city by the World Cities Study Group at Loughborough University. It is the third-most populous city in the United States after New York and Los Angeles.
Chicago has a notable and famous political culture, is a stronghold of the Democratic Party, and has been home to numerous influential politicians, including Barack Obama, the first black president-elect of the United States. The city is rich in culture and there are wide selections of shops, restaurants, theaters, museums, and academic institutions as well as many beautiful residential areas, including arts and entertainment events that take place in the city year round such as the Blues Festival, Taste of Chicago, and Lollapalooza, among others.
